Up for sale is a 1916 North Carolina license plate featuring black on gray colors and the number 8234. This plate is made of porcelain enamel, which is a thin layer of glass finish over steel. It was made by Baltimore Enamel Co., a well-known manufacturer of many states' porcelain license plates in the early years of cars.
Porcelain license plates are widely collected. They are great pieces of automotive and transportation history that also look stellar on display in a collection.
Condition:
This plate is in 100% original condition, with no paint touchups or restoration. It is in good vintage condition, considering it is a piece of glass-covered metal that was used on an early vehicle in a time before paved roads. It does show a little wear and character from use and storage over the years. Most notably, dings and chipping along the upper mounting slots and holes, where leather straps would have affixed it to the vehicle. This plate has some great gloss.
