Here we have a vintage 1909 Maine porcelain license plate. The plate features the number 4250 and white on red coloring. This is the style of plate that Maine used and issued from 1905 to 1911. From the number on the plate, we can date this plate to 1909.
This plate is made of porcelain enamel, which is a thin layer of glass finish over steel. It was made by Baltimore Enamel and Novelty Co. out of Baltimore, Maryland, a well-known manufacturer of many states' porcelain license plates in the early years of cars, as well as many iconic advertising signs.
License plates make great house warming gifts or gifts for someone who was born the year the plates were issued, and they look stellar on a wall in a collection with many different states and colors. It would be a neat gift for someone who lives in Maine, a souvenir to remember a trip to the state, or even as decor to a Maine lover.
Condition:
This plate is in decent vintage condition, considering it is a piece of glass-covered metal that was used on an early vehicle in a time before paved roads. It does show some heavier wear and character from use and storage over the years. Please note that the plate has been heavily touched up and restored. We have attempted to include many detailed photos of this, so please include those in your own assessment of condition and feel free to message us for additional photos. The edges seem to have been reinforced and/or restored all the way around (see the photo of the back of the plate). In addition, there have been several patched chips in the field (easiest to see in the reflections) and the top part of the "4". Please message us with any condition questions.
